001 — browser infrastructure for agents
protostatis
proto- (first) + stasis (a standing still)
I build browser infrastructure for agents. unbrowser discovers the web without Chrome; Unchained runs the steps that need a real one, on your machine, with you keeping the final action.
Selected work
- unbrowser Agent-native browser and MCP server for Chrome-free web discovery, escalating to a real browser only when a flow actually needs one.
- Unchained A local Chrome workspace your agent drives. Multi-step tasks run on your machine, and you keep the final send, buy, or submit. Its control plane is open as unchained-infra.
- coral A passive knowledge reef: it captures every page the browser agent visits, and keeps them queryable afterwards.
Now
Most agent tooling treats the browser as a black box. The interesting part is the seam: what a DOM-level pass can answer cheaply, and the narrow set of flows that genuinely need a browser you can see, steer, and trust.
Everything here is built around one rule — an agent may act, but a person keeps the irreversible step.
- building
- unchained-infra, the control plane and session boundary for Unchained.
- maintaining
- unbrowser, the Chrome-free discovery path for agents.
- thinking
- Where discovery should stop and a real browser should take over.
The name
Proto Statis joins two roots: proto-, first or earliest, and -stasis, a standing still. Put together they read less like a label than a description: the first thing that stands.
That phrase already has a name. The prime mover is the first cause of motion and is itself unmoved — everything else moves because it stays put. I took the word for that: not the thing doing the most, but the thing that holds position so the rest can happen.
Most software is the opposite: moving too fast to inspect, or settled until nobody remembers why it was built that way. The useful state sits between them — something you can start quickly, then hold steady long enough to find out what it actually does.
It is also the loop I build for. An agent does the moving; a person stays the fixed point that keeps the irreversible step.
- proto-
- Greek prōtos — first. The prototype, the earliest form.
- -stasis
- Greek stasis — a standing still. Equilibrium between opposing forces.
- read as
- First standing — the prime mover, the cause of motion that does not itself move.
